2010 Go Red For Women Luncheon
Red dresses, red feather boas, and red hearts were the trend at the Go Red For Women Luncheon & Fashion Show, organized by the local American Heart Association to raise awareness and funds to fight heart disease, the leading killer of women.
About 220 women – and a few good men – attended the event on May 5 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Downtown Tacoma. The American Heart Association says supporters raised $115,000 for the cause and money will be funneled into research projects and initiatives that help to end the gender gap related to the awareness, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in women.
The fashion show, sponsored by MultiCare Health System, was a first for the Go Red For Women Luncheon. Eight women, from a little girl to grandmothers, showcased stylish red outfits from Macy’s, and shared how heart disease and stroke have touched their lives in very personal ways. Their stories ranged from being born with a heart defect to recovering from a heart attack or stroke.
Also a first was the presentation of the Go Red Ambassador of the Year award, which went to Dyann Lyon of Tacoma. It was Dyann that envisioned a group of volunteers doing community education on heart disease prevention, which evolved into the Go Red For Women Ambassador program for Pierce County. Only six months after the group was formed, 18 women currently serve as ambassadors and have reached more than 1500 people through speaking engagements at companies, clubs, senior centers, and community events.
The Go Red For Women Luncheon & Fashion Show kicked off with a silent auction, health screenings, and a VIP Pampering Session at Club Biella. Guests were abuzz during the luncheon when Tacoma firefighters made a special appearance to thank every person in the room who made a donation with a red feather boa.
The event was chaired by Barbara Mitchell Briner of Wells Fargo, and during the luncheon it was announced that Lysa Barbano of Key Bank would lead the campaign as chair for 2011. Tacoma native and KING 5 news anchor Joyce Taylor emceed the luncheon.
The Go Red For Women Luncheon & Fashion Show was sponsored locally by Wells Fargo, Courtyard by Marriott, and Club Biella. Go Red For Women is sponsored nationally by Macy’s and Merck.
